It is with inexpressible sadness and sense of loss that I report the passing of the moving spirit and driving force behind Orrin’s Story, my husband of 45 years, Dr. Thomas V. Getchell. Tom died in his sleep on July 20th, 2013. Tom’s life was filled with accomplishments as a professor, mentor, research scientist, and wonderful husband, father and grandfather.

The genealogical research that we did on the Gatchells of Maine and their ancestors and the writing of the book Orrin’s Story: Patriotism and Love of Country:  The Union Now and Forever was incredibly important to Tom as well as to me and our family and was the first milestone of Tom’s semi-retirement. I feel that one very significant way in which I can honor Tom’s memory would be to continue the blog posts to expand on Orrin’s experiences, observations, and family.

Tom and I had written a blog that was ready to be posted two days after his death, and I will begin by posting it as a tribute to Tom on Sunday, November 16th, which would have been his 75th birthday. Tom left an excellent collection of ideas for future blog posts and preliminary research for many of them, so I have a great deal of material from which to draw, in addition to several ideas of mine that we had discussed. I will try to proceed with the high standards and passion that Tom set for this work, and I hope that you will be patient with me and continue to follow Orrin’s story.

Thank you,

Marilyn Getchell
